Places Of Interest

Auroville

Auroville was built on the lines of the dream city of Aurobindo in 1968 by the Mirra Alfassa lovingly called as Mother. The idea to construct the 'City of Dawn', as it is famously known to be, was to develop a peaceful world for the people who will be treated equally and not divided by any norms of caste, creed, politics etc. Currently, it serves as the research center to many philosophers and scholars dealing with the idea of human unity. The central Matrimandir here, is one of the largest meditation centers in the world. The beautiful structure is an amalgamation of modern western and traditional Indian elements. The residents of this utopian city practice various professions starting from agriculture to technology.

Sri Aurobindo Ashram

Located on Rue de la Marine, Sri Aurobindo Ashram is the favorite among the devotees seeking spiritual salvation. Set up in 1926 by Aurobindo Ghosh (Sri Aurobindo), the ashram is the wealthiest and the most popular one in India. The spirituality here is a unique synthesis of yoga and modern science. The Influence of the Ashram and the idea of Aurobindo can be felt in the air of Pondicherry. The main building is actually the mausoleum of Aurobindo and the Mother, where the devotees record their attendance in large numbers daily.

French Consulate

Situated on Marine Street, the building was allotted to the French Consulate General in 1956. Once an old cemetery, it was purchased by the Fulgence de Bury family in 1777. The property has beautiful gardens and outbuildings. Later in 1840, the possession of the house went to the French government and in next three years they constructed the first floor. Open to the French citizens, it is the diplomatic mission in town.

Pondicherry Museum

Located in the former Law Building on Saint Louis Street, the Puducherry Museum, is a home to many rare artifacts. There are many sculptures, excavated from the Arikamedu and dating back to the times of Cholas and Pallavas, that are preserved in the museum. The ground floor has a beautiful collection of the transport mechanisms of those times. The Bronze items range from the idols of gods and goddesses and other utilities used in the temple. The other preserved items here belong to Greeks, Romans and Tsung Period of China.

French War Memorial

Erected in the remembrance of the martyrs of the First World War, the French War Memorial is situated on Goubert Avenue. On the Bastille Day every year (July 14), the memorial is illuminated and a mass gathering is conducted paying homage to the French soldiers.

Ousteri Lake

The Ousteri Lake or the Osudu Lake is a man-made freshwater lake. Almost a century old lake, is one of the important wetlands of Asia and Pondicherry. The lake is a home to a large variety of fauna and flora. The whole biosphere in the region is favorable to the migratory avifauna and the native birds during summer and winter. Many steps have been taken by the governing bodies to make the region an ideal ecosphere for the flora and fauna. They have even planned to develop the area as a complete eco-tourism tourist destination. A small boat club operated by the PTDC, at the lake offers a half an hour of ride to the visitors. The ride is aimed to provide an opportunity to the visitors to spot some interesting species of birds visiting the southern paradise during the season.

Botanical Gardens

The Educational and Recreational value is added to the city by the great Botanical Gardens situated here. Laid out in 1826, the gate that leads to the garden that has quaint style French architecture. The 22 acres garden house is now a home to 1500 species of flora. The placards indicating the name also shows some interesting stuff related to the specie. The garden has been divided into 28 plots, each dealing with a different theme. Built as an agro research center by the French, Perrottet transformed the place into a botanical garden. His memorial is also erected in the garden premises. The whole garden can be toured on a Toy Train. There is also a musical and dancing fountain, which runs two shows in the evenings but only on weekends.

Promenade Beach

A 1.5 km long promenade beach also awaits in Pondicherry. An early morning or late evening stroll along the beach gives you a chance to breathe in the pollution free air, and gift you some time to spend with your family. The greatest attraction of the Promenade is Le Cafe. A place to sip coffee and liven your taste buds with a great range of snacks.The seafront also houses many memorials of the era bygone.

How To Reach

Air
Pondicherry doesn't have its own airport. The nearest airport to the city is at Chennai, Tamil Nadu. One can either hire taxi from the airport or board a bus from the Chennai city, 16 kms away from the airport, to reach the city.

Road
Pondicherry has direct bus links to several capital cities of south India.

Rail
Pondicherry is connected by a railway branch line from five-way junction at Chennai and Villupuram. Broad Gauge line of the Indian Railways connect it to several other cities in the southern, south-eastern and eastern regions of India.

Best Time To Visit

October to February: In this season the city gets drenched in November. In December the city gets livened by the zest of celebrations, which include Christmas and the New Year. During this time, the activities at the Ashram also increases as it is during this period only they celebrate the birth and death anniversaries of the Mother and Shri Aurobindo. The city, during this time, enters a total celebratory mode.
